Our story starts with our Cuban roots and with one hope: to share our food and build a family project in Tenerife.
After training as a chef in Cuba, I came to the Canaries with my wife, who trained professionally as a pastry chef. Family ties brought us to this island, where we started looking for a place to make our dream of opening a restaurant real.
We finally found our place in El Carretón, in the municipality of Arafo. It all began in a small wooden house, with a modest porch and barely eight tables.
From the start our idea was clear: to bring the flavours of Cuba to Tenerife. We began working with Canarian pork, a deeply rooted tradition on the islands, while little by little we brought in the Cuban dishes we had always wanted to share. And so, quite naturally, our Cuban roots met the flavours and customs of the Canaries.
And where does our name come from?
In Cuba there was a restaurant called La Carreta that I had always liked a lot. When we found our place in El Carretón, it occurred to me to play with the two names. That is how La Carreta del Carretón was born — a way of joining that memory of Cuba to the corner of Tenerife where our new story was beginning.
A name that also had something very simple behind it: so people would know we were the Carreta that is in El Carretón.
Sixteen years sharing our table
Sixteen years have passed since those beginnings. The small wooden house has grown with us, and those eight tables are now the 27 we have today. But one thing has not changed: our eagerness to cook, to welcome people warmly and to make every visit a good occasion to share.
